POSITION: Director of Programs RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director OVERSEES: Summer Programs and Outdoor Education
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Has a genuine personal relationship with Jesus Christ that bears evidence of an active, maturing faith and is a good Christian role model to youth and adults. 2. Possesses a love for youth and an enthusiasm for the outdoors with the ability to create an atmosphere that promotes spiritual growth and unity. 3. Is flexible and able to work with and minister to all those we come in contact with at Black Rock, i.e. campers, summer staff, volunteers, camper parents, year-round staff, retreat guests, Board members, vendors, etc. 4. Is in agreement with Black Rock Retreat’s philosophy of ministry, policies, and procedures. 5. Is willing to forego personal rights for the common good of the camp, exhibiting a servant attitude, i.e. Phil. 2:5-8. 6. Holds a college degree in a related field of study or has comparable experience directing a summer camp program or youth ministry. 7. Has prior experience leading, programming, ministering, and relating to youth ages 7-17 and post-high singles. 8. Is an up-front people person who enjoys and has a good rapport with youth and can relate well to the public. 9. Demonstrates humble leadership, strong work ethic, and a willingness to lead and participate in activities. 10. Exhibits creativity in planning, programming, and leading activities for youth. 11. Possesses strong leadership, organizational, administrative, office and computer skills and pays attention to detail. Must have entrepreneurial spirit. 12. Demonstrates the spiritual, mental, and emotional maturity needed to have sound judgment, good decision-making abilities, and the ability to stay calm and think clearly in emergency situations.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Be responsible for the overall planning and implementation of the summer camp and outdoor education programs in coordination with the established philosophy of ministry, policies, and procedures of Black Rock Retreat. Includes: Residential Camp, Day Camp, Sports Day Camps, and Outdoor Education. 2. Answer to and meet regularly with the Executive Director regarding the overall planning and implementation of the summer camp program. 3. Be responsible for the 24-hour supervision and safety of all campers, summer staff, and volunteers. 4. Develop and maintain a Christ-centered program and working environment which encourages and facilitates the spiritual growth of campers, staff, and volunteers. 5. Be responsible for handling all camper issues that may arise, including but not limited to: physical injuries and health care concerns, discipline, homesickness, reporting abuse, etc. 6. Recruit, interview, assess, hire, train, supervise, evaluate and minister to seasonal staff, including summer camp (counseling staff, activity staff, and leadership staff) and Outdoor Education staff. 7. Oversee and assist with all marketing materials for Summer Camp and Outdoor Education Programs, including but not limited to: brochures, staff recruitment flyers, social media posts, website updates/development, etc. 8. Travel for staff recruitment purposes, job fairs, conferences, and professional enrichment. 9. Plan, schedule, and implement all staff training as needed by department. 10. Maintain, update, and follow the Black Rock Retreat Child Protection Policy which relates to all child protection laws on a state and federal level. 11. Develop and utilize a theme for each summer to use as a basis for biblical teaching. 12. Plan, schedule, and implement Winter Youth Retreats and other non-summer youth events. 13. Handle all emergency situations according to established policies and procedures. 14. Operate within camp-wide facility and operations standards and enforce camp policies, guidelines, philosophies, procedures and risk management and environmental awareness plans for summer camp. 15. Work with full-time staff in various capacities, such as submitting food schedules to the Food Service Director, communicating maintenance needs with the Maintenance Director, coordinate the scheduling of events with the Guest Services Director, launching and regulating camper registrations with Summer Camp Registrar, etc. 16. Prepare and submit an annual year-end administrative report for the Executive Director and Board of Directors after each summer including program summaries, evaluations, statistical data, and planning for next year. 17. Develop and maintain the camper and staff follow-up programs. Such as sending newsletters and birthday cards, scheduling outreach and other non-summer events, and developing new ways for campers or to become involved in local churches and grow in their faith. 18. Participate in department head meetings, all-staff meetings, strategic planning meetings, evaluation exercises, and staff retreats and events. 19. Submit income and expense forecasts including proposed rates and changes in proposed expenditures to administration. 20. Participate in training seminars, local youth minister gatherings, and industry conferences to facilitate professional learning and development and stay current in youth culture and camp programming.
