COMMUNITY

The makeup of our community determines a large part of what it is like to live and work here. We have about 120 people who live on-site year round, consisting of full-time staff, families, interns, and gap-year students. Glorieta is somewhat remote with beautiful mountainscapes and about a 20 minute drive from Santa Fe.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Adventure Recreation & Sports Manager (ARS)
Department: Program Support
Reports To: Director of Program Support
Status: Full-time, hourly with benefits, housing and utilities provided

Job Purpose: The Adventure Recreation & Sports Manager functions as a member of the Program Support Team and contributes to the mission and objectives of Glorieta Adventure Camps. The ARS Manager takes primary responsibility for developing well trained staff to ensure that guests have safe, fun, high quality experiences. The ARS Manager works seamlessly with the Challenge Course Manager to ensure that all programs have safe, well maintained activities, equipment, and spaces. The ARS Manager plays a pivotal role in recruiting, hiring, and training activity guides to support the values and programs of Glorieta Adventure Camps. The ARS Manager will provide consistent supervision and observation of guides to provide constructive feedback to advance proficiency in activity leadership, practice of safety standards, and customer service. The ARS manager will play a key role during seasonal summer staff and retreat season activity training.

The ARS Manager will assist in a variety of other Program Support and Glorieta Adventure Camps initiatives including but not limited to: Staff work projects, bicycle and trails maintenance, activity leadership, High Five Zipline Adventure, special events, and special projects that help enhance the guest experience. At times the ARS Manager, like all Glorieta Adventure Camps Staff, will be called upon to assist with hosting guest groups, assist with dish cleans, etc. during peak usage times.

In the summer season, the ARS Manager will supervise a team of seasonal activity staff, lifeguard staff, and designated summer leadership staff. The ARS Manager will coordinate schedules, mentor and coach, lead Bible study, and supervise day to day assignments. Traits that are critical to success will include experience in outdoor adventure activities, (ziplines, helmets, harnesses), excellent communication skills, good judgment (being safety minded), flexibility, patience, and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time. The ARS Manager often works independently, but must also be comfortable leading groups as well as collaborating and cooperating with other managers and departments.

Overall Responsibility:

Ability to learn and understand technical systems and work with hardware such as: trollies, pulleys, cables, and tools
Ability to learn and understand technical standards from the Association for Challenge Course Technologies (ACCT) for safe facilitation of adventure activities. Current ACCT certification is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of safety systems for working in high places OR ability to learn those skills on the job
Ability to assist with Adventure Outreach events and activities: registrations, guest communications, staff training, and logistics
Ability to plan efficient high quality training for new/seasonal, and full-time staff and maintain performance standards for safety and service
Ability to execute 5-10 assigned training sessions each year on various camp activities
Take a key role in planning the overall schedule for summer staff training, and collaborating with various departments to meet the needs of all programs
Train a select group of full-time staff to assist in summer activities training
Ability to monitor and maintain inventory of activity equipment and supplies (mini-golf balls & putters, paintballs, sports balls, shooting sports, etc.)
Ability to perform daily inspections of technical systems according to Glorieta Adventure Camps protocols when needed
Ability to document and keep records of inspections on elements and equipment
Ability to perform daily checklists to maintain clean and organized activity areas
Ability to keep an organized work area and be a good steward of tools, hardware, and equipment
Assist CCM with efforts to maintain ACCT and industry standards of compliance
Ability to effectively and efficiently manage summer staff.
Conduct regular needs assessments with programs to ensure that offered activities are meeting the needs of each program’s guests
Ability to plan and dream of new activity spaces and execute necessary construction

Preferred but not required:
Ability to swim, inspect waterfront features.
Ability to be certified as a Waterfront Lifeguard or Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor
Level 1 or Level 2 ACCT certification.

Other Duties of ALL Glorieta Staff:

Glorieta Adventure Camps operates year-round. We have guests on the premises almost every day of the year. Serving guests is our number one priority, and therefore ALL staff must participate in guest service in some capacity. On most days there are designated staff to handle guest support services, but during peak times and critical moments all staff may be called upon to assist with cooking, cleaning, facilitating group activities, running retail locations, working on grounds/maintenance of camp property, and contributing to special projects as needed.

Character, Education, Abilities, Skills, Experience:

The ideal candidate will have:
Proficiency in teaching and leading others in activity facilitation
Excellent leadership and communication skills
The ability to perform tasks out of the ordinary on short notice with a degree of flexibility
Proficiency in communicating with a supervisor
Ability to work alone for extended periods of time
Ability to work at heights with ease
College degree preferred
Facilitation experience of high and low elements preferred
Must have a high competence in English with an ability to write formal documentation clearly and accurately.
Some proficiency in Spanish is advantageous, but not a requirement.

Work Context: This job will be performed primarily on location at the Glorieta, New Mexico location. This role will require climbing on high challenge course elements to perform job duties. Many days work will be performed primarily outdoors.

Travel: Some travel will be required for training, staff outings and to assist with recruiting summer staff.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift 60+ lbs, sit in office, stand all day, bend, squat, be willing to get your hands dirty, hike, climb challenge course equipment, ability to spend extended time suspended in full body harness.

Work Environment: Most work will be done outdoors.

Training: All Program Support employees will be given opportunity for improvement through appropriate training.

Compensation: Full-time, hourly with housing, utilities, and benefits.
