ASSISTANT FOOD SERVICE Manager

JOB PURPOSE:

To support the Food Service Director in planning, organizing, and administering the Food Service Department within the approved budget and overall purpose of Black Rock Retreat. The Assistant Food Service Manager helps ensure quality meal preparation, staff supervision, and kitchen maintenance to create a welcoming dining experience for guests and staff, with a special focus in front of house management.

Cooks, Assistants, Volunteers (as assigned)


GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, exhibiting evidence of a consistent, growing, daily walk.

Agrees with Black Rock Retreat's mission statement, faith statement, core values, conduct statement, and policies.

Is flexible and able to work effectively with Black Rock Retreat staff, kitchen volunteers, retreat guests, summer campers, and others.

Demonstrates strong leadership qualities and serves as a positive Christian role model.

Is willing to prioritize others’ needs for the common good of the organization.


SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Has at least two years of food service management or supervisory experience. A culinary degree is helpful but not required.

Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, including sensitivity, objectivity, and clear communication.

Understands fundamental management concepts, including planning, organizing, delegating, problem-solving, and overseeing labor, finances, equipment, and food.

Displays integrity and an honest, straightforward attitude to foster positive working relationships.

Exhibits emotional maturity and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Has or is willing to obtain ServSafe certification.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in planning menus that consider group size, age, dietary needs, and balanced nutrition.

Aid in food purchasing, working within the approved food service budget while prioritizing quality and cost-effective sourcing.

Help recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate food service staff. Provide ongoing training on safety, sanitation, and kitchen procedures.

Maintain kitchen equipment and facilities, ensuring proper operation and adherence to safety standards.

Support the Food Service Director in providing both technical and spiritual leadership to the Food Service Department.

Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen and dining areas, implementing routine cleaning schedules.

Be familiar with kitchen operations to effectively manage meal preparation and service as needed.

Collaborate with retreat committees and program heads for special food-related events.

Attend department meetings and assist in updating food service manuals and recipe files annually.

Stay current with industry trends by attending relevant training seminars, conferences, and food shows.


TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT:

Attend training seminars, conferences, and food exhibitions to remain updated on new equipment, food products, and preparation techniques.
